Just upgraded to linux 45.1.1-1 and the associated headers, upon which an error "unable to insert nvidia" occurs (nvidia 364.16-2. Unfortunately, I don't have the Xorg.0.log.old for the failed boot since it's been overwritten) and stops lightdm starting (and startxfce4 too).
Downgrading to 45.1.0-1 gets me going again.
Has anyone else experienced this and have any clues how to fix?

I assume you mean 4.5.1-1, which is in testing.
All you need to do is rebuild the nvidia package until it gets updated in testing.

Tentatively moving to testing. Roken, if you're not using testing, please clarify your situation and use the report function to request the topic be moved back.

@Roken: in the future, you can use nvidia-dkms instead of nvidia.
Automatic re-compilation of the NVIDIA module with kernel update
This is possible with DKMS. Install the nvidia-dkms package (or a specific branch such as nvidia-340xx-dkms). The dkms package doesn't use Systemd anymore, it uses pacman/alpm hooks.

Thank you all. I haven't had to rebuild the nvidia package previously, and so it never even crossed my mind. (I should have remembered from my ATI days, where every kernel update needed a new build.)
nvidia-dkms is doing the job automagically now.
And yes, WormZy, I'm using testing. I forgot all about the testing thread. Thank you for moving it.
Marking as solved.

@Roken - You should open a bug against the nvidia package as 4.5.1 is in fact a binary breaker and these and the other provided modules will need to rebuilt against 4.5.1 and placed into [testing].
