6 random shutdowns in an hour

im having a bit of trouble just keeping my computer on today, it just randomly is shutting down. its not overheating, its not overworked, anything. im really not sure where to look because im not even doing anything, and it has shut off twice with nothing even open. most of the time ive just been writing a final exam paper in OOo and it shuts off then too.

any more info you might need to help me out, let me know and ill get it. thanks.

heres what i pulled from /var/log/messages.log from the time it decided to give up:

Re: 6 random shutdowns in an hour

Perhaps try memtest86+? A lightning-fried RAM stick once made my machine reboot by itself.

Re: 6 random shutdowns in an hour

A few other things based on experience.

Start at the wall plug.  If it looks burned or loose, replace it.  If you have anyother amp suckers (heaters, AC etc) move them or the box to a different circuit.  Make sure the power cord is secure.

After that make sure the case and CPU fans work and everything in the case is secure.

If still under warranty, forget the above and take in for repair.

Re: 6 random shutdowns in an hour

Yeah, kind of sound like the beginning of the end of my XP computer. Pretty sure it was a bad power supply and before it was through, it looks like my motherboard and/or cpu got trashed. Now I'm parting it out (memory, fans, cdrw, etc.).

I want to know this computer like my lover.  Seriously, I don't know the first thing about it.  Laptop?  Brand?  How old?

Re: 6 random shutdowns in an hour

if it is a regular desktop, open up the case and inspect the motherboard  for leaking/swolen capacitors.

laptop, HP zd7180us, about a year and a half old. up-to-date as of today, but the problem only happened today and it seems to have stopped as of about 4:00 US eastern time. i have experienced this problem here and there. probably a few times a month i have a day where i get these full crashes a few times a day and then it just goes away.

back on SuSE, i used to have a bunch of ACPI problems that lead to overheating shutdowns, but this is different. most of the time today i was just using OOo and barely eating at the CPU. i have a gig of memory so using one application isnt causing it to overheat (and i did not notice it being hot), so again i dont think it was that problem again.

since i stopped using OOo earlier today, the problem hasnt reoccured. im going to check out the memtest86+ thing later tonight and see what that brings up, but i think this might have been another one of these random days where my computer hates life and wants a break or something.
