I've got a problem with Xorg, when I boot I can run startx once and have a happy working X, if I shut it down then start up again I just get a black screen.
I've tried with fluxbox and icewm so it doesn't appear to be the window manager.
A ps shows that both X and the window manager are running, killing the window manager drops the user back to the command prompt.
This is on a laptop with a
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 01)
video card.
Anyone else experience this?

check your permissions on /var/tmp. If it isn't 1777, change it.
Offline
The permissions are correct.
Any more ideas?

I've heard that some drivers cause trouble when switching to/from framebuffer, maybe try booting without framebuffer?
Offline
That sounds promising, when I tried ubuntu on this machine I had to disable framebuffer when booting the install cd or I got a really distored display.
I'll give that a go.
