gdm doesn't show login list

Before "the update" I used to start gdm automatically, select my user from the login list and logon. Now it's just going straight to (I guess) a default desktop for... well, I dunno which user. I assume root? Or maybe the gdm user? I don't seem to be able to run anything in the GNOME Shell so it's hard to tell who "owns" it.

Re: gdm doesn't show login list

Can you switch to a virtual console (e.g. by pressing [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[F3]) to examine the running programs?

Re: gdm doesn't show login list

If you can get a terminal open, I think in GNOME it's Alt + F2 to launch a command - gnome-terminal - then what about just using the "whoami" command?
