Hi!
I'm got a strange Problem for a couple of days now and don't find an answer to this. I'm running Xorg 7.0 and KDE 3.5.2 on my machine. I'm also running the latest ATI fglrx drivers on a costum kernel.
Now that problem that I have is that after running my machine for some time my ram fills up more and more and doesn't get empty again. Even if I only start the computer the ram fills up like this. I have 1 GB in my computer and after the ram is filled up the system start to use the swap filesystem I also have. When both is totally full the X Server starts to use 100% CPU and nothing works. I have a 2.6.16 Costum Kernel which worked fine all the time. The problem appears since the last couple of updates for xorg some days ago.
Is there anybody having a clue about this?
Thanks!

I guess we need some more info, like: Does it happen too, to some extent, when you use the xorg driver and not the "fglrx" one?
By "costum kernel" you mean custom/self made, or the stock one?

Just checked it out if the problem also appears when using the ati drivers from xorg. Doesn't happen as fast as it does when using the fglrx module, but it does happen. So I guess the problem has something to do with xorg.
And I mean a self build kernel by talking about a costum kernel. But I'm sure the kernel ain't the problem, because I'm running this one for two months now and the memory problem appears for aonly a couple of days as said.
I still don't have a clue what causes this wast of RAM..... :?

I just created a new kernel and updated the fglrx module and everything else. But there's no change. The System still doesn't set free the RAM or Swap Space. I don't know what to do......

What process uses up all the memory? Install htop and keep an eye on it when you're X starts acting up again.
A bus station is where a bus stops.
A train station is where a train stops.
On my desk I have a workstation.

The two top most when I'm using htop and let the list be sorted by VIRT are:
/usr/bin/X -br :0 vt7 -auth /var/run/xauth/A:0-s2ZLnw -
[VIRT: 560M] [RES: 376M] [CPU%: 22.5] [MEM% 13.4]
and kicker.
But as fas as I can see, kickers memory usage stays the same, but X is increasing usage more and more...
So I reinstalled all xorg apps that are on my computer but it didn't change anything.
Anything that I can do to stop X from going nuts?
Just watched at htop again and now X has increased to VIRT: 625M and RES: 421M during I wrote this message......

My Xorg (with KDE) keeps growing too over time, but >400MB is insane.

Yeah I know. I usually also had around 400MB RAM allocated for X and KDE. But as I said, a couple of days ago it started growing without any reason.
That's why I'm looking for help. Last thing I want to do if reinstalling my entire system.
But right now it seems that I have to do it, because I don't find a solution and it also seems that no one else has an explenation for that weired problem....
