[SOLVED] VLC - no gui on startup (xfce)

I've followed the wiki for VLC and installed the package "vlc"
When I try to launch it by just typing "vlc" from a terminal I get this:

[~]$ vlc
VLC media player 2.2.2 Weatherwax (revision 2.2.2-0-g6259d80)
[0000000002047148] core libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.
[0000000002184258] skins2 interface error: no suitable dialogs provider found (hint: compile the qt4 plugin, and make sure it is loaded properly)
[0000000002184258] skins2 interface error: cannot instantiate qt4 dialogs provider
[0000000002184258] [cli] lua interface: Listening on host "*console".
VLC media player 2.2.2 Weatherwax
Command Line Interface initialized. Type `help' for help.
>

I've removed ~/.config/vlc as in the troubleshooting section, but no luck. I've also been to VLC's wiki but startup issues for Unix-based is empty

I'm not sure where to go next?

Re: [SOLVED] VLC - no gui on startup (xfce)

Read the output pacman and the error message gives you, pacman would have told you that qt4 has been made optional for the GUI component (and the errormessage you posted quite literally tells you the same, but you might've assumed that to be abnormal since you expected qt4 to already be part of the vlc package). If you have that installed and it doesn't work you might want to report a bug against the package on https://bugs.archlinux.org If it does work with that you could ammend the wiki article to make other people aware of this new fact (I might do it later tonight if I don't forget, since this is something one can mention on the wiki page).

Re: [SOLVED] VLC - no gui on startup (xfce)

Thanks for reply! That must be it, I have not installed "qt4", whatever that is. I will do some research and post back if installing it works.

Is there some way I can view these pacman messages after the install? I had a look in /var/log/pacman.log and it does give some info, but not the ekstra text that sometimes seem to follow packages when you install.

Edit: VLC complains about missing qt4 plugin. Should qt5 work for that or should I install both packages?

Re: [SOLVED] VLC - no gui on startup (xfce)

You have to install the qt4 package, qt5 is a new version that isn't backwards compatible and the current version of VLC only supports qt4.   The log only contains what you actually have installed, therefore you should always pay attention during an upgrade/installation as well. If you want to find out about optional dependencies after the fact,

pacman -Qi $package

will list this information as well

Re: [SOLVED] VLC - no gui on startup (xfce)

After installing the package "qt4" it worked like a charm. This should probably be in the wiki.

Thanks for your help!

No, this should be a dependency!

Edit: nevermind, it has qt4 added as an optional package.
Edit2: It says so in the wiki now smile https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VLC_media_player

Re: [SOLVED] VLC - no gui on startup (xfce)

Way to bump a thread... It isn't because it adds unnecessary overhead if someone (external applications or headless systems) only requires the library or the console version of vlc. It is an optional dependency and pacman will tell you why and for what purpose.
