[Solved]Cinnamon freezes

I am having issues with cinnamon freezing on me since the last cinnamon update. It will freeze randomly without warning, but the only thing that actually freezes is the screen. Any audio playing continues to play in the background. The mouse does move. I can't click on anything, no keyboard commands work, videos stop playing but the audio continues, I do still have access to the other tty consoles with ctrl-alt-fx. So the system isn't frozen, just cinnamon visually is frozen.

For the moment I have rolled back to packages from 25/04/2016, which has corrected the issue. But I don't know where to being looking for this problem. All my logs look normal, I don't see anything out of the normal.

Anybody have any ideas?

Re: [Solved]Cinnamon freezes

Upgrade the packages one-by-one (with their dependencies if needed) and see what package breaks things. Then at least you have a starting point.

Re: [Solved]Cinnamon freezes

I am also experiencing this. There's a bug open for Cinnamon at https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/5254/.

As mentioned in the bug, it seems to be related to gnome-terminal--I can use the desktop without crashing just fine until I open gnome-terminal, after which I have to restart the desktop, or it begins to freeze. Also, there seems to be a problem running pacman updates that invoke gtk-update-icon-cache (I don't always experience that though, but always the thing with gnome-terminal).

A temporary workaround for me has been to switch to a different terminal emulator and run updates from a TTY.

Thanks for the information. Until a fix is released upstream I have downgraded to cinnamon 2.8.

Re: [Solved]Cinnamon freezes

Cinnamon is freezing CONSTANTLY on my desktop, but not my laptop oddly enough. I had noticed the freezes being triggered by terminal activity, but I am using mate-terminal-gtk3 on both computers. What really drives me crazy is I can't kill cinnamon from a different virtual screen, I have to kill cinnamon-session.

There is no system but GNU and Linux is one of its kernels.

Re: [Solved]Cinnamon freezes

There's been a fix released upstream in Muffin, the Cinnamon window manager. I flagged the muffin package out of date, so we should hopefully see it later today.

EDIT: It's now available as muffin-3.0.1 (although you might need to wait for mirrors to sync). Hopefully, it solves the problems you were having.
