gnome-settings-daemon giving me unbelievable crap

Okay... start X and Gnome, and half the time I get an error about gnome-settings-daemon failing to start. Launch a config app, e.g. gnome-theme-manager, I get a similar error:

Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'.
Without the GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not take effect. This could indicate a problem with Bonobo, or a non-GNOME (e.g. KDE) settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the GNOME settings manager.

Keybindings don't work properly, either taking longer to register with Gnome than they ought to or simply doing nothing at all.

Screensavers (both xscreensaver and gnome-screensaver) refuse to start with the session. They must be started manually, and of course cannot be triggered by keybindings.

This stuff is almost exactly the same as what I was getting when I tried Gnome with the ipv6 module blacklisted... But that module is loaded now.

WTF is the problem here? sad
