[Solved] No disks showing up in /dev or lsblk on MSI GT72S 6QF

Hi,

I'm trying to install Arch on a laptop I recently bought. It's the MSI GT72S 6QF. Here's their page on it. I'm using the archlinux-2016.05.01-dual.iso installation media.

I'm booting in UEFI (not legacy mode). I still have Windows 10 installed and I'd like to dual boot. I've resized the Windows partition to 75GB, so there's about 425GB for Arch on the SSD. The HDD just has a small recovery partition on it for Windows. I'd also like to use LVM for this installation. I'm using LVM on my old laptop.

After enroling the loader and vmlinuz.efi I was able to get into the Arch console, but no disks are showing up in /dev or lsblk. Here's the output of those and some other commands:

As you can see, only /dev/sda (my usb stick with the arch linux iso burned onto it) is showing up. Neither the SSD nor the HDD in the laptop are showing up. A user in the IRC pointed out that this is likely because this laptop has Intel fake RAID on it. They linked me to this PDF and recommended I save a disk image in case I break anything while messing with the RAID. Unfortunately, Clonezilla (their recommendation) doesn't detect my disks either.

I tried doing modprobe raid0, raid1, raid5, raid6, raid10, and dm-mod. I also tried running a command to "activate" the fake raid but am not having luck:

# dmraid -ay
no block devices found

Not seeing anything at /dev/md* either.

Any help would be extremely appreciated. I like this laptop and really want to get Arch working on it. If that's not possible, I'm taking recommendations for similar laptops that I might have more luck with :)

Maybe all that is normal when the SATA controller is in RAID mode, but I rather doubt it. Especially not if you opted for the "Exclusive Super RAID 4 (Dual NVMe M.2 SSDs by PCIe Gen3 X4 in RAID 0)".

Skylake support in Linux is still iffy, and I'd be surprised if fake RAID support were high on the list of priorities. Did you run mdadm -–detail-platform as indicated in the pdf? Did it indicate Intel RAID was detected?

Re: [Solved] No disks showing up in /dev or lsblk on MSI GT72S 6QF

Yeah I did, but forgot to post that.

# mdadm --detail-platform
Platform : Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology
        Version : 14.6.0.2285
    RAID Levels : raid0
    Chunk Sizes : 4k 8k 16k 32k 64k 128k
    2TB volumes : supported
      2TB disks : supported
      Max Disks : 7
Max Volumes : 2 per array, 4 per controller
 I/O Controller : /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:17.0 (SATA)
          Port0 : - no device attached -
          Port1 : - no device attached -
          Port2 : - no device attached -
          Port3 : - no device attached -

So you're basically saying I'm probably not going to be able to get this working?

Re: [Solved] No disks showing up in /dev or lsblk on MSI GT72S 6QF

Not right away anyhow. As the dmesg indicates, the drives are detected but there are some errors. But there are no errors on the Windows side, which would rule out a hardware issue. So it could be that the kernel just doesn't have proper support yet. You may have to go upstream (kernel bugtracker and mailing list) for help.

Re: [Solved] No disks showing up in /dev or lsblk on MSI GT72S 6QF

Update on this: I was able to get Arch detecting all of the disks just by switching from RAID to UHCI in the BIOS. This probably has destroyed my Windows installation, but I noted my license key beforehand, and should just be able to reinstall it without the RAID configuration. Marking as solved.

Re: [Solved] No disks showing up in /dev or lsblk on MSI GT72S 6QF

I assume you mean AHCI rather than UHCI?

At any rate, I hope you'll still consider taking the issue with RAID mode upstream. You could help troubleshoot a kernel bug on bleeding edge hardware... or maybe someone would tell you that you just need to use this and that kernel parameter.

Hi defualtxr, please vote in this bug that I created to have mdadm patched to work with your HDD controller in RAID mode. I have the same hardware however I don't want to use AHCI. Thank you! REgards! https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/49306
