mpv doesn't install fonts for OSD

Recently I found myself running into the issue described here, in which the mpv on-screen display failed to actually ever display anything. The fix there (installing ttf-dejavu directly) rectified the issue.

Should ttf-dejavu, or something else which provides an equivalent font, be made a dependency of mpv?

I suppose one or more of the popular sans-serif fonts could be made into optional dependencies as a reminder to make sure you have at least some font available, but there's no reason to force a specific font package on mpv users.

You could suggest this in the bug tracker.
