beyond and the vesa framebuffer

Ok, maybe I am missing something absolutely obvious, but is there any way to disable vesafb for the beyond kernel?  My grub options don't state anything about a frame buffer, and neither does the mkinitramfs.conf file.  Yet vesafb is still loaded during boot.
