Hi,
I read already a lot of articles, wikis etc. but found no solution. I want to record the sound I hear but have only the input source mic, line and cd. So far I understood that I need a source like stereomix but I have no idea how to get it. The "line" source is physicaly not there so I can't use a cable from headphone to line.
Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

"record the sound i hear" You mean the sound that is running on the computer?
That's actually easy with Pulseaudio. start a recording in audacity, then start pavucontrol and switch to the recording tab. There you will find a dropdown. Set it to the Input monitor of your actual soundcard. (pulse will remember this setting, so you don't have to do this the next time)

well I am sorry. I forgot to say, that I don't see anything related to audacity in pavucontrol. There is nothing at all in the recording tab. I can select "all streams", applications or virtual streams - nothing. Is there any option in audacity I may have missed?

If you have pulseaudio-alsa (and no otherwise conflicting .asoundrc or asound.conf in your $HOME or /etc directories) pointing Audacity to the default source as opposed to a specific hardware source should let it be controlled by pulseaudio and allow for the rerouting options outlined by Rasi

Hi,
I renamed .asoundrc. There is no .asound.conf. In audacity I do not have a "default" source. All recording devices I have are:
- HDA Intel: ALC260 Alt Analog (hw0,2):Mic:0 and 1 ... Line:0 and 1 CD:0 and 1
- HDA Intel: Si3054 Modem (hw:0,6): Mic:0 and 1 ... Line:0 and 1 CD:0 and 1
- modem:Mic:0 and 1 ... Line:0 and 1 CD:0 and 1
- phoneline : Mic:0 and 1 ... Line:0 and 1 CD:0 and 1
So I have 24 options but no "default" or "stereomix".
The sound device points ALSA without any other option.

As mentioned, install pulseaudio-alsa, reboot the system, you should have a default output which will route ALSA applications to pulse, given you don't have anything conflicting defined yourself already.
Also FWIW if your usecase permits, you could use pulseaudio's own recording facilities to record a specific stream to file i.e.
parec --monitor-stream=INDEX filename
where the index can be found from
pacmd list-sink-inputs
but the previously mentioned option does work in Audacity.

Many Thanks! I didn't realize that pulseaudio-alsa is an additional package which needs to be installed. After that - everything is working!
