USB 3.0 card won't work anymore

I had to change my motherboard to an Asrock K10N78-1394 because my other old Gigabyte GA-MA 770-DS3 stopped working for unknown reasons.

Well, maybe this has nothing to with the problem I just found out.

lspci gives me

The last line shows the PCI-Express extension card, which worked well on the Gigabyte Board. But now I find that no device is recognized. Even a simple USB stick which shows up connected to the internel usb 2.0 connectors causes no reaction when connected to the usb 3.0- connectors. When I plug in my mobile device, the battery starts loading, so there is power, but no further reaction.

Suspicous line in dmesg are:

Re: USB 3.0 card won't work anymore

Do the versions in `pacman -Q linux` and `uname -a` match?  If not, reboot.  Have you upgraded a kernel or rebuilt the initramfs since changing the mobo?  Have you tried the fallback initramfs?

Re: USB 3.0 card won't work anymore

Does the card have a connector for power? If it does make sure it is connected.

Re: USB 3.0 card won't work anymore

Thanks for all your advices.
After further fooling around I deinstalled my external pci-express graphics card which covered the first of two pcie x1 slots.
To my surprise:
The card works in this slot without problems, but when pluggin it again in the second slot, I get the strange

xhci_hcd 0000:04:00.0: can't setup: -110
[ 24.283869] xhci_hcd 0000:04:00.0: USB bus 2 deregistered
[ 24.283937] xhci_hcd 0000:04:00.0: init 0000:04:00.0 fail, -110
[ 24.283972] xhci_hcd: probe of 0000:04:00.0 failed with error -110

messages after udev started in the boot process.

So for now I have to decide whether to live with the onboard graphics or to miss my new usb3-extension card ...

Re: USB 3.0 card won't work anymore

Might easily be a BIOS or hardware bug. Do you have a chance to test with this other OS?

I guess you have nothing to lose trying:

rmmod xhci_hcd
modprobe xhci_hcd dyndbg=+p

This should print some more spam to dmesg. Maybe something interesting, though probably we'll just find out it times out on the first attempt to contact the chip. Note that it timeouts after 23 seconds, so you'll need to wait.

Is lspci -vvv output any different between the slots?

Re: USB 3.0 card won't work anymore

I took the chance I got this Saturday and could plug  in a hard disk with win7. The result is similar:
In slot one, everything works as expected. In slot 2 the card is recognized and the driver installation is told to be o.k., but the windows device manager shows an exclamation mark at the beginning of the name of the usb3 extension card - and, no usb drive is recognized.

So I guess we can blame the mainboard and/ or the second pcie-slot?!

Re: USB 3.0 card won't work anymore

Check if there are BIOS updates available for this board and try toggling the "PnP OS" option in BIOS.

There is a bunch of pci= boot parameters described here, you could try a few. Maybe nomsi/noacpi/nocrs/realloc.

Re: USB 3.0 card won't work anymore

So far, no further luck.

In the Bios, which is the newest I can find, there are under Plug and Play two options to find:

PCI Latency Timer, which is set to the lowest value being 32, and
PCI IDE Bus Master, which disabling didn't help so I enabled it again.

I fooled around with the boot options pci=nomsi, noacpi nocrs and realloc - separate and all together. The best I could get was the mouse connected to the PS2-Port not working.

Re: USB 3.0 card won't work anymore

If it doesn't work with windows I wouldn't spend too much time trying to make it work. In the off change you can make it work you will probably break something else.

Re: USB 3.0 card won't work anymore

I have a similar problem:

2:00.0 USB controller: NEC Corporation uPD720200 USB 3.0 Host Controller (rev 04)

[    1.663952] xhci_hcd 0000:02:00.0: xHCI Host Controller
[    1.663961] xhci_hcd 0000:02:00.0: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 2
[    1.702444] xhci_hcd 0000:02:00.0: Host not halted after 16000 microseconds.
[    1.702447] xhci_hcd 0000:02:00.0: can't setup: -110
[    1.703391] xhci_hcd 0000:02:00.0: USB bus 2 deregistered
[    1.703438] xhci_hcd 0000:02:00.0: init 0000:02:00.0 fail, -110
[    1.704576] xhci_hcd: probe of 0000:02:00.0 failed with error -110

It worked yesterday and I'll re-chek functionality under Windows.
Changes to the computer: pacaur -Suy and Installation of Windows 8.1 with update to Windows 10 on second harddrive.

Maybe we'll have to check the recent updates for changes to the USB3-drivers.

It should be cached in your pacman cache.
