Desktop extremely sluggish when OpenGL application is running (NVIDIA)

Hi,

when running OpenGL applications that put some stress on the GPU, many applications such as firefox, skype, evince will be atrociously slow. I am using DWM, thus I don't have a compositor running which uses the GPU. When switching from the application to Skype the redraw of skype will take several seconds, and during that time the whole system is unresponsive. In Firefox and Evince it is impossible to scroll while the OpenGL application is running, and the mouse cursor will stutter. However, not all applications are affected, chromium somehow manages to run smoothly, and terminals work as expected.

Does anyone else experience similar problems? I suspect that the affected applications use GPU acceleration and fight for GPU time. Is it possible to control the scheduling? Is there a way to disable GPU acceleration for the desktop?
