[SOLVED] Gray areas on screen appearing striped

A while ago dark gray areas on my display strated appering striped and I think this happened after a system upgrade. The effect is not visible on screenshots and it's very difficult to capture but the photo below might illustrate it. It shows a pattern. I'm using redhsift that afects the effect but it's also visible when redshift is not running. I tried a different cable and output but the problem persists. I've also tried plugging in a Lenovo laptop running Windows 10 and that runs fine.

I'm using Nvidia video drivers, Nvidia GT440 video card and Benq GL2760H monitor.

What could be causing this?

How are you connecting the monitor to the graphics card, analog or digital?

Digital. I'm using DVI port on the monitor side and HDMI on the card side. This combination works fine for the laptop running Win 10. I also tried a DVI-DVI cable but the result is same.

Try downgrading the NVIDIA driver, probably it's a bug in this one.

Re: [SOLVED] Gray areas on screen appearing striped

I have now tried different monitors, cables, outputs and operating systems. The problem seems to arise from the combination of Arch Linux and my hardware, probably video card. The stripes  only appear when digital output is used, there are no such problems with VGA. Strangely, this problem does not occur with other Linux systems (I have tried Mint, elementaryOS and SolusOS). So what could it be that Arch is doing differently and how could I try to solve this?

Re: [SOLVED] Gray areas on screen appearing striped

Given the downgrade suggestion: a more recent nvidia driver???
Also run "nvidia-settings" and see the settings for your crtc - notably depth, dithering and mode. 6bpp depth could cause banding (sorry, I cannot really see the problem in the photo - the vertical lines which look like a moiree effect?)

Tweaking settings with 'nvidia-settings' worked. Dynamic dithering was the problem, disabling it or setting dithering to static did the trick.

Thank you! This was driving me nuts, I already bought a bunch of different video  cables and was about to get a new video card.
