Kernel upgrade 4.6.1-2 breaks boot (dmesg, journal, pacman log incl.)

EDIT: I was able to pass "emergency" as a kernel parameter to get a shell on boot. I dumped dmesg and included it below.

I am not really sure what is happening, to be frank. Following an update my machine does not boot properly. Specifically, I see a run of boot logs just before the login prompt (no display manager). However, at this point my monitors go black and fall into a low-power standby state. I have audited my router and the desktop machine is not even registering on the network. I was able to boot from a usb, chroot onto the disk and dump the journal .. but that's as far as I could get. I sifted through the logs but nothings seems out of the ordinary ..

Here is the log from the last boot for dmesg and journal

Re: Kernel upgrade 4.6.1-2 breaks boot (dmesg, journal, pacman log incl.)

Using the emergency shell I was able to su user and startx. Although this will start X, none of the drivers are loaded for my keyboard and mouse. I am able to get one monitor displaying, but netctl never loads a network profile, etc. From what I have read, it seems the emergency shell puts you into a shell very early in the boot processes. So, I did not expect to have much work after starting X mid-boot, but the fact that I can start my window manager (i3) tells me that there is not a graphics configuration problem ..

In an attempt to narrow the problem, at least, I noticed that the kernel parameter rescue never results in a rescue shell at boot. This is why I resorted to the parameter emergency, which does work. What happens between when "emergency" gives you a shell and when "rescue" normally would?

Here is my pacman log from the upgrade just before the reboot that stopped everything .. in case it may provide any insight. Something  during this update must have contributed to my machine's current state.

Re: Kernel upgrade 4.6.1-2 breaks boot (dmesg, journal, pacman log incl.)

I ended up downgrading the kernel to 4.5.4-1 from 4.6.1.2 and I am now able to successfully boot.

Is there anything in the logs above? What are the consequences of downgrading a kernel? Seems like I just wait for subsequent upgrades before trying again.

If you don't need newer kernels (ie, your hardware is supported from older kernels), then why not just stick to the LTS kernel?  They are usually frozen on an older stable kernel version much longer than the up-to-date versions from stable branch.

There is no consequences of downgrading a kernel.  Just ensure whenever there is a kernel change, your modules are built against it.  You can opt to ignore the linux package in pacman.conf until another newer kernel is released in stable or just try out the LTS.
