[SOLVED] New nVidia card causing issues with X

So after installing a new nVidia card, and the appropriate drivers for it (nvidia), I cannot use my system!

LXDM shows it's login page, but once I log in, my monitor goes into powersaving mode.

I can indeed switch to TTY, and using startx there prodouces the same result.

I think it may be an issue with xrandr, but I can't seem to use the TTY to boss xrandr around.

Using "xrandr -d :0 --auto" results in:

X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 140 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 7 (RRSetScreenSize)
Serial number of failed request: 44
Current serial number in output stream: 45

Edit:

It's a GeForce GTX 950 (as stated by lspci) SLI'd to a GTX 295.

DE is LXDE

Re: [SOLVED] New nVidia card causing issues with X

What happens when you remove you xorg.conf & anything in xorg.conf.d then let the server auto detect everything?

Also try to set the resolution to xrandr --screen 0 -s 640x800 & restart lxdm to trigger X restart

ROG Strix (GD30CI) - Intel Core i5-7400 CPU - 32Gb 2400Mhz - GTX1070 8GB - AwesomeWM (occasionally XFCE, i3)

If everything in life was easy, we would learn nothing!

I'll try that when I get off work, and report back with results.

EDIT:

Deleting xorg.conf did not work and did not auto-generate a new xorg.conf. There was nothing in xorg.conf.d. xrandr --screen 0 -s 640x800 only tells me that it can't open the display, both using --screen and --display. Using  --display :0 I get "No protocol specified" THEN "Can't open display :0."

Re: [SOLVED] New nVidia card causing issues with X

I have found that SLI on Linux really isn't worth at all. I even had a game that performed worse with two 950GTX in SLI than a with single card. I also found SLI to be generally a source of headaches with various random bugs that came and went. I can't say for sure, but I would try things out without that GTX295. If you game strictly under Linux, I doubt you would miss the 295 and it might solve the issue. If you also game on Windows, I would urge you to benchmark with and without SLI, as I'm not convinced you'll get that much out of it (I might be wrong of course...).

If I would venture a guess at what is happening, it's that the video output suddenly changes to the card your screen ain't hooked up to, with the driver being the source of this wonderful random mess. Supposing that I'm right, as it has happened to me in the past, removing the weaker card will solve the issue.

I've mentioned a the bottom of the OP that I've removed the older card, and it's drivers.

Re: [SOLVED] New nVidia card causing issues with X

So, new update. Not sure if I should have done this as an edit, but I want this to be noticed. Did a fresh install of Arch on a flashdrive. Installed nvidia though pacman. I have no issues now with the video card when booted from the flash drive, meaning that whatever it is that's causing my issue, is tied to my instal, not the hardware. This could probably mean that's it's a remnant from the old installed card's drivers or settings.

So now I'm stumped again.

Here's what I have thus far:

The OLDER card, and it's drivers have been removed.
A FRESH INSTALL has NO problems with the card or it's drivers.
The two cards were using incompatable drivers from one another, and the older driver had to be removed to get the new ones to install.
xrandr is having issues controlling my monitor settings.

SLI on Linux sucks, and I was doing some kind of black magic to get SLI on windows to work with those two cards.

Re: [SOLVED] New nVidia card causing issues with X

Apparently, I'm a big dumb idiot. Switched to HDMI after starting X, and got my video back. Used Lxrandr to switch it back to DVI-D, save and apply. Works perfectly now. Marked as solved.

F*CK, I'm dumb sometimes. Learning experiences, hm?
