Cannot boot x86_64 from live disc on VMware

Hi all,

I'm installing the latest release 2016.06.01 inside a VMware Player 12. I'm using the archlinux-2016.06.01-dual.iso image saved to my disk, and I've checked the md5 sum after the download, it's correct.

The underlying host system has an Intel core i5 (64-bit), so I was expecting to boot and install that architecture, but if I choose "Boot Arch Linux (x86_64)" in the boot menu I get this error :

:: Mounting ’/dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_201606’ to ’/run/archiso/bootmnt’
ERROR: ’/dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_201606’ device did not show up after 30 seconds...
   Falling back to interactive prompt

If I choose "Boot Arch Linux (i686)" then it boots fine, and I can install it. Then I can check whether my (virtual) processor is x86_64 compatible, as per the Arch Linux FAQ, and it is : I have the lm flag in /proc/cpuinfo.

Any ideas why this doesn't work ?

Thx in advance,
Joao

Did you enable virtualization support in the BIOS?  I know this is from the VirtualBox wiki but I think it applies here as well.

Re: Cannot boot x86_64 from live disc on VMware

Which BIOS do you mean, the physical host's, or the virtual machine's ?

I tried both, to no avail. The VM has a PhoenixBIOS, with no mention of virtualization. The physical host is an ASUS, the BIOS has Intel Virtualization technology enabled, and VT-d enabled. No mention of VT-x.

Then the VM settings include an option "Virtualize Intel VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI", which I checked, but it made no difference.

Virtualization does work, on this same combination of HW and VMware Player I can run Ubuntu 14.04 and Arch Linux i686, it's just the x86_64 that refuses to boot from the live disk.

Ya, It would be the host that would need that switch on in the BIOS and it sounds like you have it.

I've been able to run the 64 bit version of Mint 17.3 on a VirtualBox VM with my Arch host so I know the capability is there.  I haven't tried VMWare yet, but I wouldn't expect there to be much difference.

I know you run into limitations when running a VM inside of a VM but if your host is not virtual then you should be fine there.
