Pulseaudio not outputting sound

Problem is in the title. Pulseaudio won't output any sound with most of my applications. Twitch.tv is the only thing that has actually been giving me any audio. I have tested with Steam games, twitch.tv, and Spotify.

At first I tried reinstalling Spotify; that didn't work. I've tried unmuting restarting pulseaudio (killing both with pulseaudio -k and killall pulseaudio, then restarting with pulseaudio --start), restarting my computer, killing pulse then restarting the computer before restarting pulse, reinstalling pulse, reinstalling the alsa-utils... nothing has worked yet. I have no idea where the problem is.

After one of the reinstalls, alsamixer stopped recognizing "HDA Intel PCH" as the default sound card, and is instead saying "PulseAudio" is both the card and the chip. I have manually selected the sound card in alsamixer and tried adjusting audio levels from there, but it still does not output audio.

Any idea what could possibly be going on? I am completely clueless.

EDIT: I should point out that my audio has been working perfectly fine for the last two weeks or so, which is how long I've been running Arch. If it matters, I'm running AwesomeWM. I installed XFCE at first, but I don't honestly know if anything from XFCE is actually running in the background. I don't think anything is, but I'm sorta new to Linux as a whole so I may be wrong.

Re: Pulseaudio not outputting sound

Try to play something and post the following:

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
aplay -lL #Lowercase L followed by uppercase L
pacmd list-cards
pacmd list-sinks
pacmd list-sink-inputs

To provide some context, that alsamixer sees the pulse output as the default card is perfectly fine and normal behaviour, it means that all audio output should be routed to pulse, even if the application outputting sound only has ALSA implemented, which is the behaviour you want in most cases.

Re: Pulseaudio not outputting sound

That was quite a long output.

Re: Pulseaudio not outputting sound

Argh my eyes, you want [ code ] tags, not [ spoiler ] tags wink (and preferably put seperate command outputs into seperate sets of tags, makes it more readable)

That said, since you didn't mention HDMI I don't think that is where you want to play to, open pavucontrol on the output devices tab switch your fallback device to the analog card, then go to the output stream tab where spotify should be playing and switch that to the analog card as well, do that for every stream that still defaults to HDMI (they will remember the correct choice after that, and never before seen output should default to the analog card due to the fallback device switch)

Edit: Thanks! that output wasn't supposed to do anything, just give me some diagnostics to help me help you wink

Ha yea sorry about that, took me like ten minutes to figure that out. I'll go ahead and format the separate commands.

Also, thank you so much. I didn't have the pavucontrol installed for some reason, the GUI makes it so much easier to manage everything. I'd noticed that HDMI was coming up a lot in the output, I figured that would be the problem as I was posting the output. Audio is working fine now, thank you very very much.

Re: Pulseaudio not outputting sound

Cool.  Be sure to edit your first post and and [SOLVED] to the beginning of the thread title.

As to why the GUI was not installed?  Pulseaudio works just fine from the console; no X required. No sense making the package depend on X servers, graphics tool kits, etc....  If the GUI tool were included, one would have to pull all of that in.

Re: Pulseaudio not outputting sound

As an addendum to the above you can make this work via commandline as well the GUI just gives you a nice overview of everything. To get a similar effect as with the GUI you could use

pacmd set-default-sink alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo
pacmd move-sink-input $INPUTINDEX alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo #Where inputindex is the index number of the stream you want to move as seen in the output of pacmd list-sink-inputs

but yeah pavucontrol really helps visualize the relations better.
