Can't get any sound through HDMI (no audio on TV)

I know I've had this working at some point, but it's rather long since I last tried it.  It's normally been Just Working.  I don't understand why it doesn't work now.  Anyone know what it might be?  The TV plays sound fine from my Wii U over the same HDMI cable.

Re: Can't get any sound through HDMI (no audio on TV)

May I suggest you install pavucontrol ?  It is a GUI tool that provides clean, intuitive control of PulseAudio.  It may make it easy to discover what is misconfigured.

Re: Can't get any sound through HDMI (no audio on TV)

Looks good on first glance, you aren't playing anything in that output though, there should be a sink-input if you are actually attempting to play something. If that wasn't it you might want to check dmesg and/or rule out a kernel regression with the LTS kernel or similar.

You may, and I've indeed been using that, but it's not as easy to copy/paste from it smile  But it doesn't seem like a misconfiguration, but a problem somewhere else.

Ah, yeah, I wasn't playing anything at that point.  Should've taken those out when I was playing something.  I tried a few different ways to make it work but still no go.  Will try my girlfriends Ubuntu laptop tomorrow if I can find the micro-to-normal-HDMI-converter cable that her machine needs

I'll try a LTS kernel, seems like a good thing to test.
