Lenovo L540: Screen flicker only on Arch (x)

My custom Lenovo 540 laptop works well in Win 8, but in Arch the screen has been flickering since May.  I'm using i3wm, but a blank startx also flickers.  By "flicker" I mean the colors smoothly but quickly transition darker and lighter.  I believe an update caused this,

Another problem showed up at the same time; the keyboard skips, repeats, and flips letters--this makes it unusable.  Luckily the keyboard reverts to its normal behavior after some minutes or some hours (lately, only seconds).  However this occurs even without x running (during the terminal login); so if it's a separate issue I want to focus just on the screen flicker.  While the screen flicker doesn't just go away after booting, it does get much less frequent the longer x is on.  I've left Windows 8 on for long periods of time and observed no flickers or keyboard troubles at all, so I'm confident this isn't a hardware problem.  Furthermore, the laptop had been working fine for around three years or so before May 2016, so I'm fairly confident a late May/early June 2016 update causes the flicker.

Re: Lenovo L540: Screen flicker only on Arch (x)

Fixed the keyboard--loose connection.  No luck with the flickering screen, however.
