G-Technologies G-Drive 4TB not working under Kernel 4.6

I recently came into posession of a few 4TB G-Drives and I want to use them to backup my work data.  However under Linux they seem incredibly bad.

If I use EXT4/BTRFS/XFS or any other common Linux filesystem on them then they only mount as "Read only".  I have attempted to remount them using the "rw" flag but it doesn't want to do it.

So I tried using NTFS and that actuallly works for a little bit but craps out after transferring ~1GB.

Just wondering if anyone else has got these drives working for Linux.  They seem to be heavily mac-centric.  It also seems like they have a hardware controller that doesn't want to play fair for what should be a relatively simple external hard drive.

This is on Kernel 4.6.2 but I have also tried the 4.4 series.  I would like to get EXT4 working on these drives if possible.
