Unable to start desktop environment

In an attempt to get better battery life,  installed TLP and powertop. Ever since I haven't been able to get to my desktop environment.

I have an Acer Aspire E5 with both an Intel integrated graphics card & an Nvidia Geforce 940mx. I used the Bumblebee wiki to install the necessary packages shortly after installing Arch and it all worked fine until the installation of TLP & powertop. Uninstalling those packages didn't help, neither did reinstalling all of the necessary packages for Bumblebee. I am able to get to the DE if I comment out the "Device" section of my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, which looked like this after running nvidia-xconfig:

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Device0"
    Driver "nvidia"
    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
EndSection

But when that's commented out, my resolution won't go above 864x486 (the monitor can go up to 1920x1080). Here's the xrandr output:

$ xrandr

Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 864 x 486, maximum 32767 x 32767
eDP1 connected primary 864x486+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 340mm x 190mm
   864x486 60.00*
   640x480 59.94
DP1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
VIRTUAL1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

The recognized video cards:

$ lspci -k | grep -A 2 -E "(VGA|3D)"

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Skylake Integrated Graphics (rev 07)
Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI] Device 1094
	Kernel driver in use: i915
--
01:00.0 3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation Device 179c (rev a2)
Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI] Device 1094
	Kernel driver in use: nvidia

The nvidia packages I have installed:

$ pacman -Qs nvidia

local/bumblebee 3.2.1-11
NVIDIA Optimus support for Linux through VirtualGL
local/lib32-nvidia-utils 367.27-1
    NVIDIA drivers utilities (32-bit)

    Nvidia VDPAU library
local/nvdock 1.02-5
A tray icon for easy launching of the NVIDIA control panel
local/nvidia 367.27-1
    NVIDIA drivers for linux
local/nvidia-settings 367.27-1
Tool for configuring the NVIDIA graphics driver
local/nvidia-utils 367.27-1
    NVIDIA drivers utilities

And my xorg log (/var/log/Xorg.0.log):

Re: Unable to start desktop environment

How do you start your DE, startx or a display manager? And could you provide an xorg.log when your nvidia card is enabled?

Re: Unable to start desktop environment

I'm using SDDM as recommended by the Arch wiki and I just have the sddm service enabled.

In the first post I have the output of the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file when the nvidia card is enabled. Is that what you're looking for?

Re: Unable to start desktop environment

You mentioned that Nvidia is enabled in your configuration, but your Xorg log is pretty clear that you are using your Intel GPU.  I have never used a hybrid graphic system, so I cannot be of much help.  Regardless, this seems to be related to the root cause.

Re: Unable to start desktop environment

Well, I'm using Bumblebee to, ideally, use the Intel card most of the time but be able to switch to the Nvidia card when doing something graphics intensive. At this point I'm about to just reinstall my entire arch system.

It would not be wise to "reinstall your system" because then you wouldn't learn anything from it and would just be stuck again in a similar situation in the future.  Two ways to go about accessing your system when it won't boot properly: 1) When you are at your bootloader screen choose the option to edit the kernel line and append " 3" at the end of it without the quotes, so <space>3.  That will boot you into single-user text-mode where you can disable or enable services, edit text configuration files, and the like.  And 2) boot off your Arch Linux installation medium and once you are at the root prompt mount your hard drives under the /mnt directory and then arch-chroot into that directory.  Then you are in the same environment as 1.

Re: Unable to start desktop environment

Suggestions removed to avoid confusion. (References did not consider the use of Bumblebee.)

Re: Unable to start desktop environment

using nvidia -xconfig is not recommended anymore. Try booting without configuration files at all.

DO NOT install nvidia-libgl

The bumblebee explicitly tells you this

"Note: bumblebee depends on mesa-libgl and provides all nvidia-libgl, nvidia-340xx-libgl and nvidia-304xx-libgl to avoid dependency conflict between the respective libgl versions."

Absolutely correct dazemc.

Sorry amlamarra. My initial post ignored the use of Bumblebee. You have my sincere apologies if my error caused confusion.

Yeah, I'm avoiding reinstalling the system for just that reason. It's hard to devote time to this with a 3 month old to take care of.

I don't see an option to edit the kernel. I'm using systemd-boot and the only options I have are:
- Arch Linux
- Windows Boot Manager
- EFI Default Loader
- Reboot Into Firmware Interface

On a previous laptop I used Grub and had an "Advanced options for Arch Linux" option. Is there a way to get that in systemd-boot?

Regardless, I don't have a problem accessing the system. I have used your #2 option, but I can also just boot to my Arch Linux partition and when the boot process stops, I hit Ctrl+Alt+F2 to change to another virtual console. Sometimes I have wait for a little bit for the screen to stop flickering. It'll flicker with the F1 virtual console and my keystrokes don't always go through. But for some reason it usually stops and I can do what I need to.

I checked and I don't have nvidia-libgl installed.

I renamed the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file (added .bak to the end) and I was able to get into Arch (KDE Plasma) just fine! The resolution was really low, but I was able to bump that up. Before, I was just commenting out the "Device" section in the file, which allowed me to get into Arch. The difference was that I wasn't able to raise the resolution for some reason.

The xorg log file still indicates that I'm using the Intel card and running "glxgears -info" confirms this. Using the "optirun glxgears -info" command also works & shows that it uses the GeForce 940mx card.

Now I'd like to be able to set certain applications to run with the Nvidia card if possible... And after reading more about Bumblebee in the wiki, it looks like I can with "libgl-switcheroo-git." And it looks like I'll need to install "bbswitch" for some power management.

Also, looking at the NVIDIA X Server Settings, what are "Application Profiles" used for?
