Playing video in vlc has never been a problem with the open source drivers. But I need the proprietary driver. When I install "catalyst-test". I get problems in vlc. When I try to go fullscreen it freezes but only goes fullscreen if I move my mouse. Then the video only plays when I move my mouse, while the playback bar is visible. As soon as the playback bar goes away the video pauses but the audio continues and only plays when I move my mouse. This is very annoying and is something that never happens with the open source drivers.
Sorry if this doesn't make sense. It is not very easy to explain.

I've figured it out. It is compton that breaks it. Not sure why. Is there a way to get compton to not break vlc

Why would you want to use catalyst-test? For my Arch laptop I always use catalyst-hook and catalyst-utils. I addition I *always* follow the wiki when it comes to stuff like this. I would recommend, if possible, changing to the regular driver. Beyond that, I have never used compton, and never had that VLC issue you are trying to describe. Judging by the lack of replies I bet this is something that happens often and is google-able.
Good luck!

Everyday, I make a conscious choice to overcome my challenges and my problems. It's not easy, but its better than the alternative...
