How to do Automatic login to virtual console in LXC

I followed the standard instructions on the wiki for "Automatic login to virtual console" but it has no effect

I also tried inserting

--autologin myuser

to the appropriate lines in:
etc/systemd/system/getty.target.wants/getty@tty1.service
etc/systemd/system/getty.target.wants/getty@lxc-tty1.service

to no avail

the guy in this post claims to have had it working in 2013, but its not clear how.

also when i run startx as root i get:

Fatal server error:
(EE) parse_vt_settings: Cannot open /dev/tty0 (No such file or directory)
