[Solved] Skylake video artifacts on an HP EliteBook 820 G3

Hi,

My new work laptop shows some graphical issues, both in X and TTYs.
Most of the time, the screen looks as expected, but every few seconds, one frame is ill: the 2 or 3 cm of the top of the screen are repeated lower.

Here is a video of the problem in X, and a photo of another artifact in a TTY.

The issue disappears if I set a lower resolution, or if I plug an ethernet cable whose other end is connected to a powered device, or if I play a video (even if it is not shown, but it must be playing).
It does not appears on UEFI shells, BIOS and in the Debian Installer, but I am not sure about the resolution used in those modes.
It occurs really more often if I use the mouse or the keyboard.

The CPU is an i7-6600U and there is no additional GPU.

dmesg shows :

[   12.164190] [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe A FIFO underrun
[   20.962573] mei_wdt mei::05b79a6f-4628-4d7f-899d-a91514cb32ab:02: Could not register event ret=-22

Removing the package xf86-video-intel does not change anything, as most of things that appears on https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel_graphics
The microcode does not seems to have any update:

[    4.159041] microcode: CPU0 sig=0x406e3, pf=0x80, revision=0x94
[    4.159060] microcode: CPU1 sig=0x406e3, pf=0x80, revision=0x94
[    4.159094] microcode: CPU2 sig=0x406e3, pf=0x80, revision=0x94
[    4.159130] microcode: CPU3 sig=0x406e3, pf=0x80, revision=0x94
[ 4.159285] microcode: Microcode Update Driver: v2.01 <tigran@aivazian.fsnet.co.uk>, Peter Oruba

Does anyone have any clue about this ? smile

Driver      "modesetting"

Fixed all issues under X, not on TTYs, but it doesn't really matter.
Maybe I should have posted that on "Kernel & Hardware"…

It worked for a day or two, then artifacts shows up again.

This time, adding

intel_idle.max_cstate=1

fixed everything.
