color correction not working (xrandr), how to calibrate color

I'm trying to calibrate the color of my laptop's screen with xrandr

xrandr --output LVDS1 --gamma 1.05:1.0:0.85

This is not working as intended, it only changes the color tint of the window border.

The white background in the browser is unchanged! (chromium and firefox)

Is there any way to calibrate the whole screen including applications in linux?

EDIT: Installed "redshift", which works, but seems like a weird solution.
