I'm having some trouble with X, and monitor resolution.
When I start X, it starts in 1280x1024, but I want to use 1152x864. I tried using Ctrl+Alt+ '+' '-', but I get from 1280x1024 to 1024x768.
The other problem I'm having is that on the sides of the screen, everything is slimmer. Fonts look very thin, and in the center they look too fat.
My monitor is an AOC 7F, 17" flat (not lcd).
My video card is an intel 865G integrated (i810).
This is my XF86Config.

Well I guess you figured it out since it's been such a long time since your post...but just in case...
either run xf86config where you can select any resolution you want on startup. ALternately, just edit the lines in your XF86config from 1280Xwhatever to 1152xwhatever.
You can't scroll using ctrl+ whatever it is because the resolution you want is nowhere in your xf86config - the next available resolution is 1024, which is why it always goes to that.
HOpe it helps.
