History lesson: The <Ctrl-[> - <Esc> equivalency in the terminal is merely a side-effect of the way physical terminals handled <Ctrl>, and we're still beholden to these limitations. :'(

Yeah, I have no experience with GTK customization so I just assumed that represented the only possibility.
