System hangs on X session shutdown

Hi all,

Haven't been able to find a solution for this one yet.  In the last few months of Arch updates, a problem has started on my system.

I use XFCE4 desktop environment.  When I want to stop X for some reason, Ctrl-Alt-Backspace works fine.

BUT - when I go to the XFCE4 shutdown menu (through the X menu or by clicking the I/O button in the panel), and select the option "Quit current session", the system hangs.  Only way out is a Ctrl-Alt-Del or hard reboot.

When I select this option I see my desktop background photo sort of pixellated across the screen momentarily, then a blank screen, then back to the pixellated background and freezes.

Anybody else had this one?  Any pointers to previous discussion my searching didn't turn up?

Thanks
Francis

Re: System hangs on X session shutdown

Update - this seems to be an X or Nvidia problem, because it happens in Gnome too.  I tried installing the full Gnome desktop as an alternative and the same problem.  When I exit the session or "logoff"  from Gnome the system hangs and I get a blurred / pixellated image of my desktop background on the screen.

Ctrl-Alt-Del still reboots the machine at this stage but nothing else responds.

Suggestions?

Thanks

Re: System hangs on X session shutdown

Do you use a framebuffer for consolemode ?
(this usually means you have a boot parameter like vga=xxx )

Not all Nvidia cards work good with this.

If you are using a graphical login xdm/gdm/kdm it may help in troubleshooting to switch to a console login.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

(A works at time B)  && (time C > time B ) ≠  (A works at time C)

Re: System hangs on X session shutdown

Framebuffer might be the answer.  I have a 1280 x 1024 LCD monitor and changed my console mode to that resolution I think using the vga=xxx.

I don't use any _dm, just console login and startx.

My system is fairly new, the graphics card is a single MSI NVidia GeForce 6600 GT, 128MB RAM.   The motherboard is an ASUS A8N-SLI but I don't use SLI.

I'll try removing the boot parameter and report back.

Thanks for the suggestion..

Re: System hangs on X session shutdown

Hi again, I removed the vga=xxx framebuffer mode but this didn't help.

I have now posted my Xorg.0.log file at:

http://web.aanet.com.au/francis/xlog_dump

The only error line is:

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to tear down DAC

which is at the end of the log.

It seems like some problem between the nVidia driver and the Evdev mouse driver (I'm using a Logitech MX518 optical mouse).

Any further suggestions much appreciated.

Thanks
Francis

Re: System hangs on X session shutdown

I've had this problem for a long time as well.  Also running Nvidia and it seems to be fairly random...it doesn't happen every time I log out of Xfce, but maybe around 1/2 to 1/3 of the time.  I also am using the evdev driver, so perhaps that's a good place to look.  Definitely keep reporting back, as I'd be interested if you can track down anything consistent...

Re: System hangs on X session shutdown

title Arch Linux Beyond
root (hd0,6)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26beyond root=/dev/sda7 resume2=swap:/dev/sda9 video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr,1280x800-32@60 ro
initrd /boot/initramfs-beyond.img

That's an example from my grub config.

Since after remove

video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr,1280x800-32@60

this line, no problem didn't doccur.

Re: System hangs on X session shutdown

Hmmm.

My grub entry doesn't have that line, and also I use the stock kernel, not beyond.

I had a couple of sessions where the problem didn't occur, but then it was back again..  I wonder why it's intermittent?

I'll try eliminating the evdev mouse driver when I get some time to fiddle with it.

Yes I also use nvidia and evdev.. going back to 'mouse' driver helped me wink Unfortunately now I can't use the top (button 10) of my mx310 but its fine smile

Edit: actually i switched back to evdev cause i really liked that button 10 lol.. now i can start gnome-terminal with a single click of a button wink X seems to shutdown okay now and doesnt crash on logout
