TDLS: Failed to set TPK to the driver

I'd like to get TDLS working (to speed up syncthing etc between devices that are far away from the router) and I have no idea how to start. Is it even possible / working for anyone?

"iw list | grep TDLS" = nothing.
"iw list | grep TPK" = nothing.

Not sure where to look... for anything...

After trying various adapters, I recently ended up with a TP-Link WN722N (ath9k / AR9271 802.11n)... which - according to various sources - should have been one of the "most compatible" adapters out there. But it didn't turn out to work as "perfectly" as "various sources" suggested so far and I'm not unwilling to buy a different one if there's a good chance I could get TDLS (or anything else for that matter) working (better).

Any hints?
