Well, I tried to use my ifp device with amarok but didn't have any luck with it as user.
It works fine as root so a permission problem seems obvious.
Maybe something with udev rules?

It's been a while, but I remember when I used the Ifp drivers for my iriver, i always had to be root. I couldn't get it to work as my user, but then I never tried to use amarok, so I didn't mind and didn't work too hard with it.

I added this to my /etc/udev/rules.d/custom.rules:
BUS=="usb", SYSFS{idVendor}=="4102", SYSFS{idProduct}=="1008", MODE="0660", GROUP="usb"
You might have to use a different product id... use lsusb to find the right one.
