Hi everybody,
I'm quite a happy user of Arch on some machines for a while now. Today I got two old Thinkpad T23 with S3 SuperSavage graphics, which makes some trouble to work under newer XORG servers due to the problem, that is described here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/IBM_ThinkPad_T23
"The savage driver supports two types of hardware acceleration: XAA and EXA. Unfortunately, you can use DRI for SuperSavage only if you are using XAA. Since you want hardware 3D (for instance, opengl/d3d in wine) then this is probably important.
This means you must run xorg-server < 1.13, because starting in 1.13 XAA was removed."
So my final question is how can I easily setup an Arch Linux with this outdated XORG server or is there any other way to let the S3 work under the latest XORG server versions. It is far two slow using it with the standard video driver.
Maybe someone tried this an can point me to an instruction...

xorg-server 1.12 is in AUR: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/xorg-server1.12/

Not an Installation issue, moving to AUR Issues...

I seem to remember an unfinished discussion about this... hmm.
@root never posted back, so I'm unsure whether he got it working, but that should get you started.

Hi there,
thanks for the hint...
... I tried to install xorg-server1.12 via YAOURT
after a while compiling it said xf86-input-evdev1.12 is needed - and I tried this via YAOURT
and here it neeeds xorg-server-devel <1.12.99 - what I did not find in the AUR
looks like a challenge for a non software guy like me and I may need some help here. Any idea is welcome!

Ah yes, that stupid thing. Just remove xf86-input-evdev1.12 from the depends in the xorg-server1.12 PKGBUILD. It's not actually a depend. Then you can build xorg-server1.12, which also creates an xorg-server1.12-devel package, which you can then use to build xf86-input-evdev1.12

Hi, thanks,
managed to install /compile the xorg-server ... but now xf86-input-evdev is missing and if I try to intsall it pacman says it is not compatible to xorg-server1.12
Any ideas?

Oops,
I was too fast,
I just realized to install the xf86-input-evdev1.12 via AUR - seems working.
So I've got just a beginners question: how can I prevent pacman from updating the Xorg-Server-1.12 while updating the system?
best regards, Ingolf

List all packages you want to pin under a IgnorePkg key in /etc/pacman.conf. See the man page for pacman.conf for a detailed description.

What 2ion said. Though in this case you don't actually need to do anything, because you don't have an xorg-server package, you have an xorg-server1.12 package from AUR. pacman won't touch AUR packages, they're your responsibility.

You can also just use the old Xorg repositories that Vi0L0 maintains. This would save you the hassle of compiling the packages yourself.
