Hostnames in Samba does not work - only IP address

Hi.

I would like again ask for your help. I was able to find why i cant over SMB in my previos topic - kio was at fault.

No i found that i just could not connect to any sambashares using hostnames, only ip address. Dolphin is not able to see samba shares, computer in the same workgroup. I can enter it only when in Dolphin type smb://<address>

Could somebody help me?

This is my smb.conf:

# This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
# smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
# here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options (perhaps too
# many!) most of which are not shown in this example
#
# Any line which starts with a ; (semi-colon) or a # (hash)
# is a comment and is ignored. In this example we will use a #
# for commentry and a ; for parts of the config file that you
# may wish to enable
#
# NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command "testparm"
# to check that you have not made any basic syntactic errors.

I'ver been trying for past two days. No luck. Would somebody be so nice and help me? It always worked till last update with these packages:

Thank you.

BTW - it happened on all of my machines that were updated. There is no mechanism to revert back and reverting one package after one for 4 machines would take forever.

Did you define the mapping in /etc/hosts

Re: Hostnames in Samba does not work - only IP address

No, i did not. In fact, i never had this defined and it always worked. I read archwiki about samba and did not find anything about it. It is neccessary? It worked earlier, no it does not and i did not defined anything earlier either.

/etc/hosts looks like this:

/etc/hosts
#
# /etc/hosts: static lookup table for host names
#

#<ip-address>	<hostname.domain.org>	<hostname>
127.0.0.1	localhost.localdomain	localhost myhostname
::1		localhost.localdomain	localhost	 myhostname

but i dont now what should be inserted in second and third row. I read this:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=125748

but dont understand why something and what should be inserted. I know only twoj things: my ip and hostname of my machine. I need 2 thing more if i understand it.

Re: Hostnames in Samba does not work - only IP address

If you want to connect to 'foo' on 192.168.1.2' the corresponding entry would be:

192.168.1.2 foo

Re: Hostnames in Samba does not work - only IP address

I found the same issue with my samba server and my arch box. I had to set my fstab to mount to 192.168.1.13 (server IP). I got rid of my fstab (mostly) this weekend and started mounting everything thru systemd units and I was able to mount it thru //server (server hostname).

Than you. I did it earlier, without being sure so i just placed my ip and twice my machine host name. So in fact it was right.

One thing more.

Strange thing. I did nothing...just return to home, boot my desktop...and Samba works...The only thing that i modified is to add my ip to hosts allow in smb.conf. In fact i have now inserted few lines to /etc/hosts but i don't have it in my netbook machine and they both see themselve.

Strange strange. Maybe now somebody saw that samba never worked like it should (i did not have /etc/hosts edited, i did not have hosts allow in smb.conf till now) and they fixed it and now it needs?

I will leave it open. See for more time.

Thank you very much for your time and patience - still learning wink

BTW - strange thing in fact. I checked how my Samba is set up on 3 machine...there is no /etc/host edited, there is no hosts allow added and it sees everything in my Workgroup...(the only thing that was changed is name of workgroup and added shares...)Mystery one after another.

Re: Hostnames in Samba does not work - only IP address

So you should be able to browse to the same share by host name now, yes?

Re: Hostnames in Samba does not work - only IP address

I am able to browse shares without need of putting ip addres, typing, but i don't understand what happened - now dolphin sees everything, i just point mouse to samba in dolphin and see my machines. Only on desktop i have added something to /etc/hosts while other machines dont have it and they work. I will try to delete from /etc/hosts what i inserted, just like other machines dont have, and check if i will be able to see shares over samba.
