Unicode icons refuse to show up systemwide (Inconsolata for Powerline)

I initially thought this has something to do with urxvt / zsh / .Xresources / fontconfig configurations, but now i'm convinced that the font itself (Inconsolata for Powerline) is causing me troubles for some reason.

URxvt*font: xft:Inconsolata:size=12, xft:Inconsolata for Powerline

It happens with some of the icons. the following images are pretty self explanatory.

(urxvt + zsh (agnoster theme)). compiled with unicode3, iso14755, frills etc.
