[SOLVED] How to select a different desktop environment?

The question might sound trivial, but I am actually experiencing exactly this problem and also an hour of googling for it didn't yield any satisfying results.

I have a system with SDDM/KDE (Plasma) on which I have installed LXDE and LXQt as additional environments. After installing the required groups, they show up in SDDM's drop down menu.
However, they won't start what the name name suggests: Selecting LXDE will start Plasma, selecting LXQt will start Plasma. I am really confused. Please, I need some advice on this one.

It seems you solved that one, what did you do to make LXDE and/or LXQt at least to work (even that it chooses the wrong one)
How did you install Arch?

Unfortunately, I didn't solve the problem. I have an Arch installation with KDE (Plasma) as my main desktop environment. I have decided to install LXQt and LXDE besides it, because I don't need the rather heavy Plasma all the time.
My problem is logging on to the new environment as it always loads Plasma, regardless of what I choose as a session. For example I choose LXDE, it will load Plasma. If I choose LXQt, it will load Plasma. I guess if I install Xfce, it will load plasma as well.
As I said, it's very strange and I am unable to find any answer to it on the net.

What is in your sddm config file (/etc/sddm.conf)? And have you tried another display manager, or manually starting X (with "startx")?

And as dockland asked, how did you install Arch?

I don't know exactly what you mean by how you've installed Arch. Well, I have installed the base system, then the xserver and finally KDE Plasma.

SDDM call DE via *.desktop file located in /usr/share/xsessions/ (for X11/XOrg session) and in /usr/share/wayland-sessions (for Wayland). All *.desktop files located there are text files. Just inspect yourself that there are lxqt.desktop and lxde.desktop files in /usr/share/xsessions and check fields: Exec and TryExec there. They should call proper startup scripts for lxqt and lxde.

A startlxqt from the terminal will show the LXQt desktop over the current Plasma session. I have tried that before. Unfortunately, there's no way to start any other desktop than Plasma from SDDM - there are no obvious errors, but whatever you choose from the list, it will always start Plasma.

This includes this morning's attempt to start LXQt from the terminal from within Plasma, which resulted in LXQt to be displayed over Plasma. Neither nice nor useful.

A quick look at the logs doesn't indicate any problem.

Have you tried stopping plasma completely and running

xinit startlxqt

from a tty, instead of from within plasma?

@x33a: Problem is, I don't even get any tty from within Plasma (CTRL+ALT+F2~F4) just produces a black screen - never had this before. Only way to get a proper tty would be to boot into runlevel 3.

Update 22:19 JST: I have rebooted the machine into runlevel 3 and tried x33a's suggestion and issued a xinit startlxqt. Unfortunately this produced the following error:

xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to x server: connection refused
xinit: server error

A reboot into normal runlevel worked like it always does and presented me with the SDDM greeter where I can enter my username and password - and choose the desktop environment that I want to use. Unfortunately it ignores my selection and loads Plasma.

Now the above tty issue needs also be addressed. I have a very bad feeling, that all this is relaated to Plasma...

Try xinit startlxqt from a console again, and after it fails, do not do anything that causes X to restart.  Instead, post your ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log file.

@ewaller: I have just done that - I booted into runlevel 3 and issued the xinit startlxqt command which has returned the same error as yesterday (see above) and while trying to open the log file at ~/.local/share/xorg/, I found that there IS NO such directory.
I do not have a xorg directory within the local/share directory.

You logged in from a console and ran xinit.  That should be rootless and should create the file in ~/.local

Respectfully, this is an Arch Linux install following our installation guide and not the result of some "installer";  yes?
Any chance the log is in the journal? ( journalctl -b )

@ewaller As I said, I booted in runlevel 3, logged in to my account and issued the xinit startlxqt command which returned the above error. And no, there is no directory named xorg at the position you believe it to be.

I have installed Arch mostly according to the manual with a few alterations made (e.g. dualboot, LVM/Luks, etc)
But nothing that would explain the current behavior.

I am at work now and writing from my mobile. I will try to get the part from journal which hopefully has logged this mornings attempt to start lxqt this evening once I get home.

Well, the only other thing is "runlevel 3".  Are you using systemd as your init system, or are you using something that emulates the old sysinit? The systemd equivalent of init's runlevel 3 is multi-user

I am indeed using systemd (Arch is the first system I am using with it, though). Init 3 seems not to work any longer, but adding a 3 at end of the linux line before boot gets me where I wanted to go.

Just one thought: If the x server was corrupted, as it seems if I try to start it by hand, then why does it start just fine automatically - only two issues are: no desktop other than Plasma and, since a couple of days, no switching to terminal via ctrl alt fn.

Would it be possible that a recent system update has messed up with my nvidia driver? But then again, Plasma starts just fine…
