@ewaller: First of all thanks for your help. I am running Arch on a Dell T1700 workstation with a Nvidia Quadro K600 dedicated graphics card. Until now, I have never had a problem with the driver on Arch. Do you believe it could be ralated to the driver?
Regarding the journal output, I have just posted the complete output with the timestamp of what I did on Friday morning - I am sorry it wasn't what you were looking for. And yes, as you might have noticed from the journal excerpt, I am using Plymouth to provide me with a login screen for my LUKS password. No problems with that either.

That is all good, but we are trying to find out why X is terminating. That is why I want to start at the multi-user level, not the graphical level. Then I wanted to try to start X in the environment that won't work as your normal user. I had asked for the journal from the current boot assuming that the current boot not at the graphical level. The journal posted clearly showed that sddm had started. sddm runs as root. So, perhaps you thought that what you did to get "runlevel 3" did not really succeed in achieving the multi-user level.
I did not see the Xorg log in the journal. The X org logs may also be in /var/log when running as root. I need an Xorg log file from a failed attempt to xinit startlxqt from the console as your normal user.
I really suggest you try it again by booting to the multi-user level by passing systemd.unit=multi-user.target on the kernel command line from the bootloader. Make sure that no greater or display manager start.
Then, log in, try to start X, after it fails post the output of journalctl -b without truncating it along with the Xorg file from the failed attempt.

First of all, I was able to solve one issue: I am able to use tty from within Plasma again. I achieved this by appending
nomodeset
to the kernel line before boot.
The Arch Guide suggests that you add nvidia, nvidia_modeset, nvidia_uvm and nvidia_drm to your initramfs#MODULES as well as appending nvidia-drm.modeset=1 as a kernel parameter. This however does not work. You will need to append nomodeset to it, if you want to use the virtual terminals (aka tty1 tty2 tty3 etc...) from within your desktop environment.

I have rebooted the system and appended systemd.unit=multi-user.target to the kernel line. As expected, it had the same result as appending a 3 to it. So I have logged in with my user account and tried to start lxqt with xinit startlxqt.

@Fixxer: No, I don't have either of those files in my home directory. If you are talking about the configuration files for Plasma desktop, they are all in ~/.config/, seperate files for language, appearance and all other KDE related things.

OK. I've checked some things ... but maybe it's only a random case. I'm trying to package SDDM 0.14.0 for other distribution and have the same issue. It's especially curious that /var/log/sddm.log says that starts Plasma but starts Xfce (xfce - primary de, plasma - additional for tests). Removing /var/lib/sddm/*, /var/run/sddm/* and ~/.dmrc and ~/.desktop does not help. Even removing Xfce session file does not help ...
I ask users with several desktop environments to make some tests. Maybe it will be necessary to report a bug.

@Fixxer: Thanks for your information and your effort. I have installed different desktop environments for testing purpose and the problem seems to be with my standard user account (user1). All newly created accounts are able to log into any of the installed desktop environments.

If it's just your user that's affected, then it's probably something in your dotfiles.
Do you have a ~/.xprofile file? If so, what's in it?
It seems unlikely that there'd be anything in these, but look through your shell initialization files (e.g. .bashrc, .zshrc, .profile, etc.) and see if there's anything that could be responsible in those. Also take a look in ~/.config/autostart.
Finally, check your systemd user services.
