You are not logged in.
I just did a full system update via pacman and xfce now does not start properly.
(I have xfce4-session-4.12.1-4 and systemd-231-1.)
After logging in via a display manager (I have tried both LXDM and LightDM, with the same result), I get the following error dialog box:
Unable to contact settings server
Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-lipPVuKkfG: Connection refused
And then after closing that xfce appears to continue loading (with the flashing logo in the background), before showing another error dialog box:
Unable to get connection to the message bus session
Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-lipPVuKkfG: Connection refused
Closing this leaves a black screen with the pointer still working (but nothing else on the screen).
Sounds like maybe some kind of permissions issue?

Same problem here, killing mdm and running startxfce4 from tty brings up the desktop without issue. No idea what went wrong though.

There's a similar thread in the Testing subforum.

Thank you - the fix in that thread worked for me.
Appears to have been a permissions/authentication issue (pam / systemd) after all.

Downgrade dbus and libdbus to version 1.10.8-1.

That's not a fix; that is a workaround that avoids the issue.
