XGL exits on start for no specific reason

When I start XGL, I get the message

__driCreateNewScreen_20050727 - succeeded

which is exactly what should happen. What shouldn't happen is what follows it, after XGL flickers on for about a second and borks:

Fatal server error:
 no screens found

After that, startxgl tries to start the Gnome and Xfce stuff like it's supposed to, but of course fails, X having keeled over.

There are no errors in the logs or anywhere... Just that, a "no screens found" message despite everything being in working order. I've found queries about this problem on Google, but never a single answer...

(FWIW, I'm using the unichrome driver from Testing, because the via driver doesn't even get this far. The openchrome driver gives me the exact same problem as the unichrome one.)
