Hi,
after update of sddm to new version 0.14.0 my avatars in /usr/share/sddm/faces are ignored
I tried it also with the new /etc/sddm.conf configuration file, but no luck.
In the journal are these new entries; the other entries are the same before sddm update
Sep 02 17:46:45 <hostname> sddm-greeter[507]: inotify_add_watch("/usr/share/wayland-sessions") failed: "No such file or directory"
...
Sep 02 17:47:03 <hostname> sddm-helper[496]: [PAM] Closing session
Sep 02 17:47:03 <hostname> sddm-helper[496]: pam_unix(sddm-greeter:session): session closed for user sddmI do not have wayland - afaik.
And the sddm kcm in KDE systemsettings doesn't work anymore - it's blank:-(
Am I the only one?

Exactly the same here. /usr/share/sddm/faces/$USER.face.icon are real png-files, no symlinks and have not been changed recently.
Restoring the old /etc/sddm.conf does not help either.

Same for me - which looks like an sddm bug in the updated package - any upstream reports?

The config has changed drastically.

Yes I use the new sddm.conf copied from the pacnew file. Also I looked at man sddm.conf and the relevant paragraph is:
EnableAvatars=
When enabled, home directories are searched for ".face.icon" images to
display as their avatars. This can be slow on some file systems. When
disabled, all avatars will be default. Themes may choose to hide them
altogether. Default value is true.
In my sddm.conf I have the default i.e.
# Enable display of custom user avatars
EnableAvatars=true
I need to explore whether the default theme is hiding avatars (I use the default theme in the new config file). My .faces.icon file has permissions 644 so should be world readable, and also is not a symlink which I understand would have prevented it being read by sddm.
Is anyone else using a different theme in the new sddm which does show avatars?
Edit: I have tried the three default themes - Breeze, Elarun and Maldives and none of them show avatars. Are there any image dimension limits on faces PNG files now that perhaps were not previously in place?

Excellent, thank you, arojas, and for the super fast work on this.
Confirmed fixed in sddm 0.14.0-2

Hi,
yes, thanks - avatars are back
But sddm-kcm is still broken - there is also a report here:

Until fixed upstream, workaround is to either remove ~/.local/share/sddm/ or copy the themes from /usr/share/sddm to ~/.local/share/sddm.

and fixed in sddm-kcm 5.7.4-2
