After upgrade to sddm 0.14.0-2 I can no longer log into KDE with SDDM (both autologin and manual login). SDDM starts normally, user is authenticated, however KDE is not started and login screen is presented again. I can start KDE with startx, and when I downgrade SDDM to 0.13.0-3 and revert the configuration changes I can log into KDE successfully.

Ditto.
For me after upgrade to SDDM 0.14 the greeter just exits and nothing happens (ie last greeter output is just frozen). startx works. Independent of greeter, happens with both the "breeze" and SDDM default greeter.
However, I don't see any errors at all. Log:

Looks almost the same here. No errors, nothing. As if kdestart was never invoked.

I have the same problem, I couldn't login to KDE or Gnome using X, but I could login using wayland. This led me to believe that there's something generally wrong when sddm tries to create X session.
I saw that sddm uses /usr/share/sddm/scripts/Xsession script to start X session, and comparing version from 0.14 and 0.13 using diff showed me that there are some differences between them.
I copied old one from sddm 0.13.0-3 and now I can login to KDE and Gnome as usual.
I might look into this further to figure out what is causing problems and I'm really interested if other people are experiencing this issue.

Somehow this started working for me again after multiple reboots.

I figured it out why it wasn't working for me: Xsession script from 0.14 will try to execute ~/.xsession before starting whatever desktop environment you selected, where the one from 0.13 will just ignore it.
I had .xsession file leftover from Enlightenment desktop, and when I removed it from home directory, everything went back to normal. I think it was trying to start Enlightenment, and failing to do so, since I removed it a while ago.

I tried many thinks, clearing cache, modifing the Xorg i915 config, using other sddm themes
but only reverting /usr/share/sddm/scripts/Xsession worked for me.

I don't think you should be modifying that file anyway. You should use an .xsession file in your home folder for overrides.

Interesting, I do not have any ~/.xsession file, I will try v0.14 with v0.13 /usr/share/sddm/scripts/Xsession script, in a day or two as the currently running batch of computations finishes.

I had .xsession file leftover from Enlightenment desktop, and when I removed it from home directory, everything went back to normal. I think it was trying to start Enlightenment, and failing to do so, since I removed it a while ago.
Interesting, I do not have any ~/.xsession file, I will try v0.14 with v0.13 /usr/share/sddm/scripts/Xsession script, in a day or two as the currently running batch of computations finishes.
Indeed. There is just a minor change at the end of the Xsession script, in the part that executes DE startup script. As far as I can tell, it is basically doing the same thing as the old one, except that it's now sourcing the ~/.xsession file.

OK, I can confirm, that reverting /usr/share/sddm/scripts/Xsession to v0.13 enables v0.14 SDDM to start KDE, so that file should be the culprit. Also, after upgrading my laptop I've hit the same problem. There is also no ~/.xsession file on the laptop.
The changes in /usr/share/sddm/scripts/Xsession are minimal though (< v0.14, > v0.13):

Trying the changes one-by-one, it seems the problem is due to the new script referencing its arguments $@ at the end directly, while the old script first saved it to a session variable at the beging and later only referenced it thrugh it. Debuging the values of $@ I get /usr/bin/startkde at the begining but "set show-all-if ambiguous on" at the end, which is an option I have in my ~/.bash_profile file which is also being sourced in the script. That seems to be some earlier mistake of mine, since now that I google it, it is suggested to put it into inputrc. With the option there, SDDM 0.14 starts KDE as expected.
I guess, the issue's solved then... Thank you for all suggestions.

After upgrading from sddm 0.13.0-3 to 0.14.0-2 I also could not log in.
I had an ancient ~/.xsession which was trying to exec xmonad which is not installed. The file dates from when the box was running Debian.
After renaming the file I was able to login okay.
