Bad performance with Bumblebee + intel-virtual-output + i3

Hello,
I've been having this problem for a few months now, but only today noticed that this is a problem with i3. I'm using Bumblebee on my Lenovo Thinkpad together with intel-virtual-output to use an external monitor connected to the Nvidia card. Now, when I run an OpenGL application (i.e. glxgears) on the external screen, performance is quite horrible (a constant 1fps), while performance on the notebook's internal screen (wired to the Intel GPU and thus not affected by intel-virtual-output) is as expected (constant 60fps). This also happens with some other applications: Steam and KMail have those problems, for example, while Firefox and Dolphin don't. Therefore, the external screen is unusable.
Until today, I was thinking that this was a general problem of intel-virtual-output, but I just noticed that this isn't happening with KDE Plasma 5 (using KWin); aforementioned applications run fine with intel-virtual-output and Plasma 5.
At first, I thought that this has something to do with compositing missing in i3 compared to KWin, but installing compton (and playing around with various configuration options) didn't do the trick. Google didn't bring up any working solutions either.
So, is there some way to get i3 and intel-virtual-output working together properly?

Thanks!
