Switch user in Gnome without Display Manager

Hello,

I prefer to get a console instead of a display manager when I first boot up my computer, but I also like the switch user of Gnome so that my running applications are remembered. However, if I don't have gdm enabled the switch user button doesn't work... does anyone know if it is possible for me to get the best of both worlds?

Thanks,
saff

Re: Switch user in Gnome without Display Manager

Wouldn't you just start Gnome from the console as the user you want to use? You could always start a second X session on a separate TTY and switch between those. Something like:

startx -- :1

Re: Switch user in Gnome without Display Manager

Oh! I had assumed that you lost access to the other tty's when you started X because Alt+fn doesn't work, but after reading your post I googled about it and found this thread, which explained that (1) I need to use Ctrl and Alt in order to switch tty's while running Gnome and (2) Gnome (and it seems X in general) uses tty 7 by default.

It seems like this functionality provides exactly what I need, thanks for the reply!

Re: Switch user in Gnome without Display Manager

I think you can even specify the TTY to run on with startx with e.g.

startx -- :1 vt5

And I now learned that Alt+fn is enough to switch between TTY if X is not running big_smile I always used only Strg+Alt+Fn
