Hello,
I prefer to get a console instead of a display manager when I first boot up my computer, but I also like the switch user of Gnome so that my running applications are remembered. However, if I don't have gdm enabled the switch user button doesn't work... does anyone know if it is possible for me to get the best of both worlds?
Thanks,
saff

Wouldn't you just start Gnome from the console as the user you want to use? You could always start a second X session on a separate TTY and switch between those. Something like:
startx -- :1

Oh! I had assumed that you lost access to the other tty's when you started X because Alt+fn doesn't work, but after reading your post I googled about it and found this thread, which explained that (1) I need to use Ctrl and Alt in order to switch tty's while running Gnome and (2) Gnome (and it seems X in general) uses tty 7 by default.
It seems like this functionality provides exactly what I need, thanks for the reply!

I think you can even specify the TTY to run on with startx with e.g.
startx -- :1 vt5
And I now learned that Alt+fn is enough to switch between TTY if X is not running I always used only Strg+Alt+Fn
