I updated my system a few weeks ago and started to see some strange
fonts appear in a few applications like Firefox, chromium and dmenu.
For example:
In chromium/firefox, stack overflow and other sites that use code blocks:
http://imgur.com/a/PtRZ6
http://imgur.com/a/EoOYR
In dmenu:
http://imgur.com/a/NTnfM
This doesn't happen in tor-browser (I tried for comparison).
I did not find relevant help in the Font and Fontconfig wiki and on Google
so. I suspect some standard font or something was corrupted or replaced,
but I wouldn't really know where to start looking.
I wonder if somebody knows where the problem might be coming from
and/or where I should look to find the culprit.

Try to install ttf-dejavu and ttf-droid.
Sometimes it's just a matter of your system not having fallback glyphs and those two fonts provide them.

Welp, that was easier than I thought. Thank you very much, marking as solved.
