Which one is better to use?

well if you can really only use one of the two use allegro. otherwise use sbcl because it has some of the important features allegro has, but its free.

can you just use slime and emacs without installing sbcl or something else? i know there is emacs lisp but i heard it is not exactly compatible with common lisp. found that out after i got a book on emacs lisp...
