LibreOffice: Greek locale/spellchecking, only invisible characters

Hello,

I have a user specific issue with Greek spellchecking and Greek locale in LibreOffice, namely that the Greek characters are hidden, invisible, when I do the spellcheck or set the app locale to el-GR.utf8. This means I can write in Greek, but the spellchecking done blind, and the app is unusable on Greek locale.
The issue is running for some time now, along with some random exits that I fix by using "export SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk" instead of "export SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk3". I have narrowed it down to be user-specific, but I'm having trouble resolving it.

Here's what it looks like on my user: https://framapic.org/5bpqV3D2yZqR/4cAVQLnkFcgd.png

Here's what I have done so far:
- Tried with libreoffice-still and libreoffice-fresh (currently the latter)
- Removed extensions installed from the AUR (that cannot be disabled from inside LibreOffice) [libreoffice-extension-libregreek stayed in the config file, so I removed the user folder .config/libreoffice]
- removed/renamed libreoffice folder .config/libreoffice
- launched lowriter as root = in root, the spellchecking and locale works for Greek
- cannot reproduce the issue on other apps, seems LibreOffice specific
- launched LibreOffice with el_GR locale = I see the issue is larger, it concerns Greek locale as a whole in LibreOffice.

How it looks like: https://framapic.org/Xzso5hynTmJz/rv3HLq70wkkv.png

For the locale, I remember running localepurge once in the past, which I know is an unsupported package (AUR) but mention it although it's probably unrelated. I only have few locales left now. Could this be the problem? But in this case, wouldn't it be system wide?

When I run:

locale -a

I have:

C
el_GR.utf8
en_GB.utf8
en_US.utf8
fr_FR.utf8
POSIX

At this point, any pointers for resolving this apparently user-specific, app specific issue with the Greek locale and spellchecking would be welcome!

I have tryed to make this work too, but unfortunately there is not much support for this yet. I think the best "workaround" is to use wine and use a windows program for this job. Just remember to run this from terminal and specify at the front

 LANG=el_GR.utf8 wine "program.exe"

I dont know if anyone has another solution for this.

Re: LibreOffice: Greek locale/spellchecking, only invisible characters

Hello there,

Nice to see another Greek user :-)

My issue was user specific (not system wide). As I could not find the file responsible for the symptom, I carefully moved some hidden (dot) files and folders in my home folder and ~/.config.

The issue is now resolved, although I cannot point to the specific setting or file that caused the problem.

As for Greek language support in LibreOffice, telis80, Greek spellchecking is supported in LO, through Hunspell.

Just install the following packages:

for spellchecking: huspell-el (official community package)
for hyphenation: hyphen-el (AUR)
for thesaurus: mythes-el (AUR)
Two other extensions, "libreoffice-extension-greek-dictionary" and "libreoffice-extension-libregreek", are available in AUR, but I cannot say if they are better for spellchecking.

To use them, one needs to set the (paragraph language) to Greek (for example, through the status bar).

For grammar/spellchecking support, there is also a LibreOffice languagetool extension, that uses Java in LibreOffice.

Thanks for the tip of specifying the locale before launching a program, though!
