Can't log into VNC if signed on locally.

Here's my setup:

I have a desktop that I occassionally remote to, and would like to be able to use vnc. The issue is if I am signed in locally, when I try to use VNC, it gives me a blank screen, and a dbus 'operation not supported' in my display manager's log.

I followed the instructions here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/LightDM#VNC_Server to get it set up, and it works as long as I'm not signed in.

My idea was to be able to sign in from multiple locations at the same time, but if that isn't possible with vnc/lightdm, is there a different setup I can use to achieve this? and barring that, is it possible to get the vnc server to use the existing X session for the already logged in user?

Right, I've seen both, and I'm running tigervnc (as recommended on the LightDM Vnc setup wiki page). The issue is that if I'm signed on locally, I can't vnc into the machine. I'd like to keep creating new environments for new connections, and I'm not sure how you are suggesting I do that with those resources.

No ideas except checking the man page and trying a few options if you can, AlwaysShared might help.

That matches what you configured , as you've setup vnc to connect with your display manager, NOT to a specific X-session.

Tyzoid, this sounds like an x-y problem , please tell us what you want to achieve.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
