Is it possible to make dropdowns searchable?

Hello. This is my first post here, so sorry if this is a stupid question or a ludicrously wrong place to ask it.

Is it possible to make dropdowns searchable? As in: all dropdowns of the os, not only in one app. Such a behaviour is exibited by gedit:

[Pay no attention to the math homework behind]

Edit: Moved image to Imgur. Hopefully that would work better.

Re: Is it possible to make dropdowns searchable?

The math homework in the background would not bother me any.  But not being able to access the image because it is in your private google drive is an issue.

Ideally, describe the situation, don't rely on images.  But if an image is needed, use a file sharing site that makes them available publicly (so we can see them).  There are a list of good sites on the wiki.

If by dropdowns you mean comboboxes like this one then the short answer is no.

Unlike Mac OSX and Windows, linux has multiple competing widget toolkits.   The feature you are looking for would have to be implemented in (or for) the sepcific toolkit.  In practice, there is a fair chance this could work as many users may have a majority of their gui programs using the same toolkit (primarily either gtk or qt).

So if your question is to make gtk3 combo-boxes searchable, there may be an answer.  If it is for gtk2 there may be a different answer, qt4 yet another, qt5 another, etc.
