xorg-server issue after update

I recently updated my system and X broke as a result.  When I boot up my Thinkpad T510, it takes me to the login screen (cinnamon DE) but when I login, it attempts to start X, and immediately closes and takes me back to the login screen.

I can of course use Ctrl+Alt+F2 to go to shell and troubleshoot.  So I followed some of the troubleshooting steps at the xorg wiki page, googled around and found some forum posts and tried their tricks.  To no avail.  I've come up dry.

I feel like its something simple, but I don't mess with X backend very often.  I am going to guess that my primary issue is related to this error in my log file:

[ 1694.837] (EE) Error systemd-logind returned paused fd for drm node

Here is my xorg.1.log file:

This shows that the xorg server terminates immediately without doing anything (there is no delay after the starting sequence).
How do you enter graphical environment?

Re: xorg-server issue after update

Since X11 apparently doesn't crash, it will be the session which immediately terminates.
Can you switch to and login to a fluxbox or e16 session?
Can you run glxgears from there?

Re: xorg-server issue after update

I apologize for the delayed response.

I login with Cinnamon's login manager, which loads just fine.  That's the part I can't get past.

Re: xorg-server issue after update

Please try a different session type, something simple as fluxbox, e16 or icewm which does most importantly not require a GL compositor.

Re: xorg-server issue after update

I installed icewm and was able to log into an icewm session successfully.  So is there some issue with Cinnamon?

Re: xorg-server issue after update

Also, I ran glxgears and it seems to be just fine.  Unless there's some special function you want me to try.

Re: xorg-server issue after update

So is there some issue with Cinnamon?

Apparently.

Since it doesn't seem to be a GL issue, run "cinnamon-session" from within xfce. It will likely complain about some existing WM etc, but the question is whether it crashes at some point.

Re: xorg-server issue after update

I ran 'cinnamon-session' and got this error like this:

glin gio error settings schema org.cinnamon.session
Trace/breakpoint trap

I googled around and found this thread: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions … 160-print/

and I ran this command:

/usr/bin/glib-compile-schemas /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas

and that fixed it.  (Though I am posting this before rebooting).

Now, I'd like to understand why that error occured.  What causes that kind of eror?

Also, thanks a bunch for your guidance!

Re: xorg-server issue after update

$ pacman -Qo /usr/share/libalpm/hooks/glib-compile-schemas.hook
/usr/share/libalpm/hooks/glib-compile-schemas.hook is owned by glib2 2.50.1-1

Would suggest examining the pacman.log for the update to see if the hook was called and if any errors are recorded.
