Disabling Nvidia Video - 3D

Hi there,

I'm trying to use an old PC as a Home server, only running some services (torrent, plex, Samba...) without any GUI, I just access to it using SSH, no monitor connected.

I've managed to get everything working, but I've a problem with the video card temperature. Even with no X Server installed, the temperature goes up.

At first, the temperature just used to go up until 135ºC so the system powered off itself (even with no Work load at all). After that, I installed the nouveau driver (xrog-video-nouveau package) and enabled its module, and now the temperature stays stable around 70-75º C, since the driver seems to speed up the fan when needed.

The thing is that I don't really need the VGA card even working. Is there any way of just disabling it, or disabling hardware acceleration or something? I'd like to reduce power consumption, heat, noise...

My card:

VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G92 [GeForce 9800 GT] (rev a2)

Sensors output:

nouveau-pci-0100
Adapter: PCI adapter
GPU core: +1.10 V

                       (crit = +105.0°C, hyst = +5.0°C)
                       (emerg = +135.0°C, hyst = +5.0°C)

Adapter: ACPI interface
Vcore Voltage: +1.12 V (min = +0.80 V, max = +1.60 V)
 +3.3 Voltage: +3.33 V (min = +2.97 V, max = +3.63 V)
 +5 Voltage: +5.09 V (min = +4.50 V, max = +5.50 V)

CHASSIS2 FAN Speed: 709 RPM (min = 600 RPM, max = 7200 RPM)
CHASSIS3 FAN Speed: 0 RPM (min = 600 RPM, max = 7200 RPM)
POWER FAN Speed: 0 RPM (min = 600 RPM, max = 7200 RPM)
CPU Temperature: +26.5°C (high = +60.0°C, crit = +95.0°C)
MB Temperature: +45.0°C (high = +45.0°C, crit = +95.0°C)

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 0: +37.0°C (high = +78.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 1: +37.0°C (high = +78.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

I'd like just to remove it from the PC, but the motherboard (Asus P5Q) doesn't have an integrated VGA controller.

Any ideas / thoughs about how I can reduce the card temperature?

Thank you in advance. Best regards.

Re: Disabling Nvidia Video - 3D

Nothing related to it in BIOS?

No, it's a PCI-E card, so the BIOS doesn't show anything.

Oh, sorry, misunderstood you, thought it's in integrated gpu on motherboard.
How about bbswitch to disable and power down that card, if you do not use it at all?

Uhm, I've been last minutes reading about bbswitch and it seems to be oriented to laptops with hybrid video cards. I'm not sure if I can do something with it

Re: Disabling Nvidia Video - 3D

It will work on any computer. Disable nvidia kernel module loading, then execute bbswitch to power off the card.
(though, if you ask me, if you don't plan on using that card at all, I'd simply remove it from the system)

Re: Disabling Nvidia Video - 3D

Actually, this would be the best option, but the bios won't boot up without any video card installed.

I'll try to play with bbswitch.
